Frequently asked questions.
01What does an inspection actually tell me?
The report documents visible damage, manufacturing flaws, and areas of structural concern observable in the submitted photos. It includes an overall condition summary, section-by-section findings (frame, fork, handlebars, seatpost), and an inspector's recommendation.
02In-person vs online, which should I pick?
In-person is our primary service. We evaluate the bike by hand and run pulsed thermography on the high-stress junctions. Choose online when in-person is not practical. An online inspection covers everything a photo can reveal; it cannot assess what requires tactile examination or sub-surface imaging.
03What's the difference between in-person and the concierge tier?
In-person (Class B, $300) is our standard hands-on inspection and includes pulsed thermography on high-stress junctions. The concierge tier (Class C, $600) adds a second NDT modality (ultrasonic spot-checks on flagged areas), a written market valuation addendum with comparable sales for the model, and a 30 minute consultation. Concierge is intended for high-value bikes, insurance claims, or contested-condition cases. For most pre-purchase or pre-sale due diligence, in-person is sufficient.
04What are the limitations of a photo-based inspection?
Photos cannot reveal internal delamination, sub-surface voids, or damage that requires ultrasonic or X-ray imaging. For bikes with a known impact history or borderline visible indicators, we recommend escalating to in-person inspection (which includes pulsed thermography) or the concierge tier (which adds ultrasonic spot-checks).
05How long does it take?
Reports are delivered within 1 business day across every tier. The clock starts at the appointment for in-person, or at a complete photo submission for online.
06What kind of carbon bikes do you inspect?
Road, mountain, gravel, TT, and track. If you aren't sure whether your bike qualifies, contact us.
07Can you inspect frames only, or complete bikes?
Both. Frame-only inspections follow the same process; the report omits the sections that don't apply.
08What photos do I need to submit?
The order flow includes a checklist: full side profile (drive and non-drive), head tube and fork crown, bottom bracket, chainstays, seat tube junction, seatpost clamp area, and any specific areas of concern shot close-up with something for scale.
09What happens if you find damage?
The report documents what we see, where, and with what severity. We provide a recommendation ranging from routine use, to further evaluation, to structural concern. We do not issue structural certifications.
10Do you repair carbon frames?
Not yet. Repair is planned as a future service. We can suggest local repair shops on request.
11What's your policy if I disagree with the report?
Contact us and walk us through your concern. If we missed something visible in the photos, we revise the report. If you need a higher-fidelity evaluation than photos can support, we can route you to our in-person or concierge tier when slots open, or refer you to a partner with X-ray or laboratory-grade testing.
12Who are you? Why should I trust this?
We are an independent, Bay Area-based service. We are not affiliated with any bike manufacturer, shop, or marketplace. The About page describes our approach; the sample report shows what you will receive.
13Do you work with bike shops?
Yes. We partner with shops across the Bay Area that refer customers shopping used inventory. Email hello@presidiocomposites.com to discuss.
14Is this a liability-bearing structural certification?
No. Our reports document condition observable in the submitted photos. They record what we observed, not a structural certification. See our terms of service for details.
